More good news on the David Myles front. I am very pleased to announce that I was chosen as the first place winner in the Chris Austin Songwriting Contest (general category) at Merlefest this past week. Unbelievable. This is the same contest that Gillian Welch won in 1993.
It’s an honour.
I went down to Wilkesboro, North Carolina, where Merlefest takes place, last Thursday. Friday was the day of the contest and because I won I was given the chance to play again that night, this time to a huge audience. It was awesome. More people then I’ve ever played to. Probably almost 30,000 (check out the photo). Hard to know for sure but I did hear that on Saturday there was 80,000 people so I’m thinking that’s a realistic guess. Wow.
I had a great weekend. Got to check out tons of unbelievable tuneage. Saw the legendary Doc Watson (up close, I’ll attach a picture), Levon Helm, Ricky Skaggs with Bruce Hornsby, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas and a whole bunch more. It was pretty overwhelming and very inspiring. Anyway, I hope you dig the photos.
Next Tuesday, May 6th, is the big release date. The new disc will be in stores all over Canada and everywhere on the web.
Thanks, as always, for the visit.
