[LIVE] David Myles with Dylan Guthro at the Granville Green Concert Series

July 24, 2013

Port Hawkesbury puts on an exceptional free concert series each year and Granville Green 2013 is no different with headliners Barney Bentall, Tim Chaisson, David Myles, Barra MacNeils, Wintersleep, and The Fourth Well taking the stage Sunday evenings this summer.

David Myles with Dylan Guthro was the July 21st show and because we were vacationing in the area, we decided to attend. We got there early so we watched a little of the sound check.

Before the show, we managed to catch up with Dylan Guthro, and his Gordie Sampson Songcamp friends Breagh MacKinnon and Carleton Stone for a pre-show photo with two young fans. Dylan started the show with a few solo numbers before Breagh joined him onstage. Later Carleton came out to play a few numbers with Dylan and Breagh. Look for many big things from these three in the future.

The headliner for the evening was Juno Award winner David Myles and the large crowd, of all ages, was pumped. David is an exceptional performer and had the crowd eating out of his hand before he played a note. He was joined by his long-time band mates, Alan Jeffries and Kyle Cunjak, as well as a new drummer from Ingonish (whose name escapes me). David mixed some of his older classics with songs from his brand new album In The Nighttime. He had those in attendance singing and clapping along throughout the night.

David’s guitarist, Alan Jeffries, got an opportunity to show off his bluegrass guitar talents and even showcased a song from his new album. Coffee ’til Midnight. The highlight of the evening was when the local morning host from “The Hawk” joined David on-stage for “Inner Ninja”. The dozens of young kids in attendance flocked to the stage to sing and dance along. I got the impression that David doesn’t always play this in his live shows, but if the response was any indication, he definitely should.

We had a great evening. This young fan has been singing “Inner Ninja” ever since.
